Balancing the Summer Juggle: What Working Parents Need

Summer holidays bring joy for kids, but for working parents, they often bring stress, guilt, and a heavy mental load. When schools close, the usual routine dissolves, replaced by juggling camps, coordinating childcare, and keeping up with work. The data backs it up: 61 % of working parents say the school break disrupts their ability to balance work and home life. So how can teams, clients, and leaders step up?

Start with empathy and planning. Simple steps like setting expectations early can make a big difference. Let parents block out childcare and work flexibly, in terms of timing and location, just encourage them to share their availability transparently.

Support batch working. Whether it’s drafting content or scheduling posts, doing more upfront gives parents breathing room later. Even small front-loading can ease the weekly pressure.

Offer flexibility. Shiftable deadlines and adaptable meeting times aren’t about lowering standards, they’re about smarter scheduling. In the Middle East, where summer rhythms shift, flexible work isn’t a perk, it’s practical.

Normalise asking for help. The mental load doesn’t need to be a solo burden. When colleagues say ‘how can I support you?’, it changes the culture. Little gestures, like helping with a follow-up or shifting a meeting, can have big impact.

Check your language. Casual remarks like ‘sounds like a long summer holiday!’ can feel dismissive. Instead, ‘Let me know how I can support,’ sends a message of understanding.

We strongly believe effective comms go hand in hand with workplace wellbeing. As school gates close, we need to build systems that empower working parents to thrive – not just survive.
